Tom Reed served as president of the Colorado Golf Association in 1986-87. And he could play a little bit, too.
Born in Denver in 1934, Reed graduated from East High School and played on strong golf teams at the University of North Texas (then North Texas State) that earned a spot in NCAA Championships. While still in college, he qualified for the 1955 U.S. Amateur Championship in Richmond, Va. Four others would follow: 1956 at Forest Lake, Ill.; 1962 at Pinehurst, N.C.; 1963 at Des Moines, Iowa; and 1970 at Portland, Ore. Reed reached the third round at Forest Lake and Pinehurst.
Meanwhile, Reed also found time to become a force on the local scene. He won the 1959 Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship and the 1986 CGA Senior Match Play title. He narrowly missed three other major state titles, finishing as runner-up to Spike Baker in the 1957 CGA Stroke Play Championship, to Ray Pierson in the 1962 CGA Match Play Championship, and to Jim Liggett in the 1969 CGA Match Play Championship. He also earned medalist honors in 1968 at the prestigious Broadmoor Men’s Invitation.
Retired from the insurance business, Reed is known for his sincerity, integrity and willingness to help. He served 15 years on the CGA’s Board of Governors in addition to his two-year term as the organization’s president. He is a true ambassador of the game.
