Will Nicholson Sr., the distinguished former mayor of Denver, proved to be truly a leading light in focusing national attention on golf in Colorado through his masterful organizational guidance.
The Senior Nicholson—son Will Jr., is also a Hall of Famer—served as director of the storied Western Golf Association from 1933-1936 and as a member of the USGA Executive Committee from 1937-1941.
While serving on the USGA Executive Committee Nicholson was able to bring the 1938 U.S. Open to Cherry Hills Country Club where he also served as general chairman the championship. This was the first of many national championships that have since been held at Cherry Hills and in Colorado.
